Newmont Slate Co., Inc., produces roofing slate that is natural, recyclable, and lasts 100 + years, with a low energy production ratio qualifying its slate for consideration as a “GREEN” product. Due to these qualities, Newmont Slate is seeking GREEN certification for its products which will assist architects and contractors applying for LEED certification for their buildings.

FROM THE GOOD EARTH TO THE PALLET—Process, See Below
Newmont Slate maintains quarries of large acreage with ample deposits of fine quality stone. Newmont Slate quarries, manufactures and sells roofing slate directly to clients with direct access and added convenience. Newmont Slate upgrades plant machinery and engineers equipment from the ground-up to maintain efficient production and timely delivery. Below, is a composite of Newmont Slate’s production process.

(L) General quarry activity from drilling and extracting, to transporting raw stone to the plant for processing.

(L) The slabs enter the plant on custom conveyers equipped to carry large tonnage.

(R) The slabs are cut evenly into various sized blocks with a water cooled diamond saw.

(L) Blocks of slate are moved to the splitting area where every slate is hand-split to specifications.

(R) After the slate blocks are split into individual slate, each side is trimmed to size.

(L) Each slate is punched two holes at a time, to accommodate the roofing nails. This process bevels the holes allowing nails to be countersunk.

(R) Daily, plant machinery is repaired, continuously upgraded, or built from the ground up through adaptive and creative engineering which maintains efficiency and quality production.

(L) Every pallet of roofing slate is checked for quality and are counted by the Plant Manager or owner before leaving the plant.
